BitGirls was a Japanese TV show and blockchain based project on Counterparty, that allowed viewers to support girls by purchasing their tokenized cards. Viewers were also able to vote for their favorite BitGirl based on their performance during a show. BitGirls was very innovative for its time and offers some of the first examples of NFTs of real people, NFTs of photography, NFTs associated with a TV show, NFTs involved in a voting system, and NFTs of only women.

Early history

BitGirls was first broadcasted on Japanese Television on Tokyo MX TV on October 21, 2016. The show aired for five months. You can find all of the episodes and presentation of the BitGirls on the official BitGirls YouTube channel.

The BitGirls ICO was managed by Zaif exchange, and BTC, XEM and XCP were the three possible cryptocurrencies that could be used to purchase BitGirls. It raised roughly 288 BTC.

Supply and rarity

There are four types of tokens.

Torekabu tokens

Each individual BitGirl had a unique currency issued as part of the ICO. Each girl's Torekabu token had a hard cap of 5 million with 3.5 million being sold in the ICO and 1.5 million being reserved for the team. The tokens were named after the girls. For example, Chikarin's token was CHIKARIN. These tokens had the utility of being able to be redeemed to recieve the NFT cards of the BitGirls (BG tokens).

BG tokens

BG tokens are the NFT cards depicting each BitGirl. A holder of a specific girl's Torekabu token could redeem it at the ratio of 1:10,000 in order to receive the corresponding BG token for that girl. For example, If someone held 10,000 of the Torekabu token, CHIKARIN, they could them all to redeem 1 CHIKARINBG. Since the circulating supply of the corresponding Torekabu token for each girl was the 3.5 million sold in the ICO, with 1.5 million held back by the max circulating supply of each BitGirl is thought to be 350 given it appears that the team's reserved tokens weren't used much to redeem a BG token. The actual circulating supply for each BG token is lower than 350 because not all Torekabu tokens were swapped for their corresponding BG token and it is no longer possible to redeem them.

VIX tokens (Christmas edition)

VIX tokens are a limited edition of six cards/tokens made up of five BitGirl as well as the presenter of the show, Risa Yoshiki. The max supply for each of these limited edition cards is 1,000, but it is not well known how many were actually distributed.

The VIX card of Risa Yoshiki was suddenly removed from the official directory BitGirls. It is thought that problems between Risa Yoshiki's agent and the producer of BitGirls lead to its removal. This event inspired later a memorychain card, REJECTEDVIX.

Other tokens

BITGIRLSI and BITGIRLSII were tokens that could be exchanged with all of the BG type, and they are thought to be very rare with only two or three early holders collecting them.

Distribution

The majority of the supply of all tokens is held by Zaif exchange (address 3DZzgGNxsSK1XyUJcKHLM9PxLTEypPGo8W). Collectors holding them on Zaif exchange have made withdrawals overtime, with the last known withdrawal occuring on September 8, 2022.
